Reynolds Lake Oconee Golf Courses: The National

Of the six championship courses at Reynolds Lake Oconee, The National might be the most unique. Not only does it dazzle the eye with a gorgeous layout, but it's also the only course in the area with 27 holes. Among them are three sets of nine holes with different names, but similar designs. Every fairway is situated between tightly packed pine trees and weaves its way around corners and across rolling hills, creating a course that's almost as challenging as it is scenic. You might say the course is so much fun to play that 18 holes just isn't enough, so they built another nine.

The National History and Accolades

The National was creatively designed by one the top golf course designers in America, Tom Fazio, in the late 1990s, although the final nine holes didn't open until 2000. The course was also renovated in 2014 to bring out even more of its stunning beauty. The three separate nine-hole layouts, known as the Ridge, Bluff, and Cove all include towering trees such as pines and flowering dogwoods, not to mention hilly fairways and strategically placed bunkers.

The scenery, charm, and smart design of the course hasn't gone unnoticed either. Much like the other Reynolds Lake Oconee golf courses, the golf world has recognized The National with the following accolades:

Best Courses You Can Play in Georgia - GOLF Magazine

Top 20 Best in State - Golf Digest

Best Courses You Can Play - Golfweek

The National Course Layout and Design

It's hard to decide whether the trademark of The National is the 100-plus bunkers situated besides the fairways and greens or the striking elevation changes on almost every hole. Additional challenges also come in the form of significant doglegs and water-protected greens on select holes. Fazio didn't forget about Lake Oconee either. This breathtaking body of water doesn't come into play quite as much as some of the other Reynolds Lake Oconee golf courses—Great Waters, in particular, comes to mind—but it is used nicely on a few holes, both beside fairways and in front of greens.

The challenges on this course come from the need to be fairly strategic when contemplating what shots to hit. With most fairways slopping in any direction, it's important to pay close attention to the terrain and try to avoid becoming too awe struck with the scenery. The bunkers create their own set of challenges, with unique curves and dips that aren't seen on many other courses in the area.

Among the more memorable holes is No. 6 on the nine-hole Ridge section. This Par 5 features a green with water on three sides, not to mention a winding fairway with a cluster of bunkers in the middle of it. Hole No. 6 on the Bluff section is also a memorable Par 5, highlighted by a dogleg left around a pond with a fountain in it for your tee shot. Hole No. 3 on the Cove nine is a Par 3 that provides an extremely pleasant view of Lake Oconee through a few trees behind the green. Don't hit your tee shot long, though, or you might not enjoy the lake quite as much.

The National Tavern

You'll probably have worked up quite the appetite after your round at The National, especially if you play all 27 holes, so it only makes sense to relax and enjoy a delectable meal at the clubhouse-style restaurant beside the course. The National Tavern is located on the final hole of the Bluff section and features wonderful twists on traditional dishes such as pizza, mac & cheese, pot roast, and sandwiches, all in a pub atmosphere. Whether you're eating lunch or dinner, you'll enjoy mouth-watering food and spectacular views of the course

The National Real Estate

There are several options for those wanting to live near The National golf course. Beautiful single-family homes built in several different traditional architectural styles are situated nearby, featuring well-manicured lawns outside and spacious floor plans inside. Of course, the same can be said for most Reynolds Lake Oconee homes for sale, particularly the homes near golf courses. You can browse listings of all golf homes in the area and read additional info on what makes these homes so amazing on our Reynolds Lake Oconee golf homes page.

Reynolds Lake Oconee Golf Courses: The Landing

Reynolds Lake Oconee is home to six spectacular golf courses, considered to be among the best in the Southeast by many experts. Scratch golfers and casual hackers alike come from hundreds of miles away to experience these state-of-the-art courses and their stunning views as part of their vacations. Among these scenic courses is The Landing.

The Landing History and Accolades

Built back in 1986, The Landing was the original golf course at Lake Oconee and it certainly set the bar high for the courses to follow. Designed by renowned golf course architect Bob Cupp, the course was originally known as Port Armor Golf Club and acquired by Reynolds Lake Oconee in 2005. Those who have reviewed the course over the years have referred to it as a design masterpiece, with breathtaking landscapes and a variety of sights throughout the course. The Landing has received many accolades over the years:

Listed as one of America's Top Golf Courses by Zagat Survey

Named one of the Best Courses You Can Play in Georgia by GOLF Magazine

Hosted two PGA tournaments

Gorgeous Course Design and Outstanding Features

Perhaps the best compliment you can give The Landing is that it will always keep you engaged. The diversity of the course will keep the golfer in you from getting bored, while the scenery and use of every natural feature will ensure the sightseer in you is constantly in awe. Some holes feature rolling hills in an open setting and others highlight the tall trees as you wind your way through Reynolds Lake Oconee's wooded areas.

If you're wondering how The Landing makes use of Lake Oconee, don't worry. Three holes are situated right on the shoreline, while others provide amazing views of the water from slightly farther away.

Elevation and route changes are common on this course as well, with numerous shots requiring a steep look uphill or downhill in order to see where your ball is headed. These dips and turns in the course certainly present their challenges, but also make for an unforgettable experience. In particular, the 10th hole has a distinctly elevated tee box, making it one of the best driving holes on the course. Another memorable hole is the 18th, with a semi-island green surrounded by both sand traps and a water hazard that doesn't need a huge elevation change to make you take notice.

Keeping the course in pristine condition is a top priority for staff, so you'll love the lush grass and you won't mind that the fast greens and, at times, thick rough present additional challenges. To further ensure the freshness of the playing surface, the course also underwent a major renovation that finished in 2013.

It's certainly a challenge and, at over 7,000 yards, it might be lengthy for some, but The Landing is truly a fantastic course that will create life-long memories for those who play it. This eclectic gem perfectly incorporates every part of the natural environment that Reynolds Lake Oconee is famous for and whether you live in one of the immaculate homes nearby or you're visiting on vacation, that's really all you can ask for.

The Landing Clubhouse

Whether it's before or after your round, or even if you're not playing the course at all, stopping at The Landing Clubhouse for a bite to eat or a relaxing drink with friends is a must. You'll find it nearly impossible to find a review of the food at this clubhouse that isn't a stellar recommendation of the mouth-watering dishes. Customers love the savory burgers, flavorful wine, and friendly service. It has a variety of food and drink options for both dinner, lunch, and even brunch, and the view overlooking the course creates a peaceful atmosphere.

The Landing Clubhouse also includes a wonderful golf shop, a fitness center with modern workout equipment, a playground, several tennis courts, and a waterslide that's over 140 feet long.

The Landing Real Estate

Near the golf course and shoreline of Lake Oconee is where you'll find a series of beautiful homes that make up The Landing real estate market. Imagine being able to walk to the golf course and lake from a luxurious multi-story home in one of the most magnificent environments in the country. Whether you're looking for a new full-time residence or a vacation home, this dream could be your reality if you buy a home near The Landing.

Reynolds Lake Oconee Golf Courses: Great Waters

Among the most prominent of the many fabulous features of Reynolds Lake Oconee are the six state-of-the-art golf courses. Whether you're a casual hacker or a veteran scratch golfer looking for a challenge, Reynolds Plantation golf is an experience you'll never forget. The scenery is incredible and the variety in each hole within each course is second to none. Among these fabulous championship golf courses is Great Waters.

Great Waters Accolades and Awards

Appropriately named due to the number of holes with spectacular views of Lake Oconee, this Jack Nicklaus-designed masterpiece was built in 1992 and was recognized as one of the Ten Best New Courses by GOLF Magazine not long after. The accolades didn't end there, though. Great Waters has received many additional distinctions over the years:

Named one of America's Best Residential Courses by GolfWeek Magazine

Awarded Golf Course of the Year by the Georgia Golf Course Owners Association

Ranked No. 41 on GOLF Magazine's 2016-2017 edition of the Top 100 Courses You Can Play

Hosted the PGA Professional National Championship tournament in 2008

Hosted the Andersen Consulting World Championship tournament (now known as the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship) from 1995 to 1997

Great Waters Course Design

The course has something for every type of golfer. Experts of the sport will tell you this is one of the most challenging, but levelheaded courses Nicklaus has ever designed. Yes, it's equipped with fast greens, large bunkers, and numerous water hazards, but it's fair. There are no ridiculous slopes on the greens or hills that will have you shaking your head. It's a straightforward course that offers variety on almost every hole, without going overboard.

Casual golfers will enjoy the genuine nature of the course as well. You won't hear anyone feeling misled by any of the greens or blaming the course for a bad shot at the end of their round at Great Waters. This makes your round that much more enjoyable, regardless of how you play, and it means you can focus on the stunning views and towering trees instead of the difficulties of the course. The five sets of tees also make the course a suitable length for all skill levels.

But while the straightforward nature of the course allows for honest scores, most of us aren't there to focus on the scorecard. What makes Great Waters stand out from most other courses around the world, and even the other Reynolds Plantation golf courses, is its beauty

Front Nine

The front nine makes you feel as though you're deep in the Reynolds Plantation forest, with rolling hills, lush grass, and beautifully-manicured fairways winding their way through tall, majestic trees. There are also a few small water hazards along the way that compliment the forest. It's truly a parkland-style course through the first nine holes and as you admire your wooded surroundings you'll almost forget how close you are to a 19,000-acre lake. However, that all changes on the back nine.

Back Nine

After the 10th hole, the course completely opens up to make way for astounding panoramic views of Lake Oconee, which is either in play or visible for all of the final eight holes. In fact, the back nine is so scenic that it has prompted comparisons to the famous Pebble Beach Golf Links in California.

Multiple elevation changes only enhance the breathtaking scenery, leaving many golfers speechless as they look over the lake and majestic Georgia hills. In particular, the Par-3 14th hole is among the most photographed holes in southeastern United States.

Jack Nicklaus did a wonderful job using Lake Oconee to complement the golf course, as opposed to using it simply to provide water hazards. That said, the lake does provide a few challenges in addition to the lovely views, most notably on the Par-3 17th hole and the lengthy 540-yard Par-3 18th.

Course Improvements

Great Waters is also well-maintained by groundskeepers, who work hard to keep the fairways, greens, and roughs in pristine condition. Major work was done on the course in 2009, when the greens and bunkers were restored to their original size and shape. The greens were also changed to Miniverde Bermuda grass, resulting in a putting surface that remains more consistent throughout the year.

Thanks to the gorgeous landscape, the amazing lake views, and the smart course layout, Great Waters is one of the top golf courses in the entire country. If you're a visitor or a resident of Reynolds Lake Oconee and you feel the urge to hit the links, it's a course you need to experience

Great Waters Clubhouse

Whether it's before your round, after your round, or instead of a round, the Great Waters Clubhouse provides a perfect atmosphere to enjoy a mouth-watering meal and a tasty beverage. The menu includes everything from sandwiches to steaks to seafood dishes to salads. Adding to the delicious food is the extensive wine list and alternative drink options. While you're enjoying your food and drinks, take in the captivating panoramic views of Lake Oconee and the 18th hole of the golf course.

The Great Waters Clubhouse is also a wonderful view for weddings and special events. A massive lawn that overlooks the lake is located behind the clubhouse building for outdoor parties. If you'd rather have a roof over your head, the elegantly decorated interior, bay windows and wrap-around porch are ideal for indoor or covered events.
